What I Wish I Knew When Starting Out as a Pilates Instructor

Becoming a Pilates instructor is a rewarding journey of personal growth and empowering others. Here are 6 tips for those just starting out.

This article has been developed by Kiara McMillan, Marketing Coordinator at insurance.com.au and qualified Pilates Instructor.

If you’re thinking about becoming a Pilates instructor, I’m excited for you! It’s an incredible journey filled with many rewarding moments, personal growth, and the chance to help others find their strength, mentally and physically.

As I reflect on my own experience as a Pilates Instructor, here are a few tips for those who are just starting out.

1. Find Your Purpose

Take the time to reflect and truly understand why you want to teach Pilates. What drives you to share Pilates with others? Reflect on your motivations. Do you want to help people recover from injuries, improve their fitness, or simply find joy in movement?

Identifying your purpose will not only guide your teaching style but also help you connect with your clients on a deeper level. When you approach each class with a clear sense of purpose, it not only becomes easier to inspire and empower your clients but gives you a sense of confidence within yourself.

Clarity of your purpose will keep you motivated through the challenges that inevitably arise along the way.

2. Your Own Practice Matters

We all know practice makes perfect, but it also makes you a better teacher.

In the beginning of my journey, I was so focused on learning the technical stuff that it overpowered the enjoyment of my own practice.

Spend time developing your practice, even the ‘easy’ stuff. Not only will this deepen your understanding of movement, but it’ll also help you connect with your clients on a personal level.

3. Choose The Right Training Program

There are many Pilates certification programs out there, which can feel overwhelming.

Don't be afraid to get on the phone with the education providers and ask questions. Talk to your favourite instructors and see where they studied. And lastly, consider your goals. Whether you’re into mat, reformer, clinical Pilates, or maybe all the above. Find something that aligns with you.

4. Build Your Network

Networking can feel a bit intimidating, but it’s so worth it!

Connect with other instructors, build a social media presence (this ended up acting as my resume), and try out as many new studios as you can. Building relationships can lead to job opportunities, collaborations, and valuable insights into the industry.

5. Protect Yourself

Okay, let’s talk about what’s super important but may not be front of mind: Insurance protection.

Professional indemnity insurance for Pilates instructors is crucial. It protects you from claims of negligence or injury, which can happen even in the best of classes. It provides peace of mind, allowing instructors to focus on teaching without the legal worries hanging over you. Professional Indemnity insurance will protect you as an individual and is essential for Pilates Instructors.

6. Enjoy the Journey!

Lastly, remember to enjoy the ride! There will be ups and downs, but each step is part of your growth as an instructor. Celebrate your successes, learn from your mistakes, and keep that passion alive. Helping others discover the power of Pilates is one of the most rewarding things you can do, take it from me!
